Our Story
Four Mothers Collective Story
Four Mothers Collective was founded in 2021 as a grassroots art collective, run by Indigenous women, dedicated to addressing the systemic barriers and lack of representation faced by BIPOC women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals in the art world. Recognizing the unique challenges these communities encounter—such as limited access to resources, professional development, and platforms for showcasing their work—the founders established Four Mothers Collective as an inclusive, safe space within the Mvskoke Reservation where BIPOC individuals can express themselves, connect, and thrive creatively and professionally. Inspired by the traditional role of matriarchs within our communities, representing the interconnected strength and wisdom of women across generations, the collective seeks to revitalize matrilineal lifeways and create a supportive environment for cultural expression, healing, and empowerment. Our mission is to provide creative supplies, workshops, classes, and mentorship opportunities that facilitate the voices and success of Indigenous, BIPOC, and Two-Spirit artists, empowering them to overcome barriers in the art world. At its core, Four Mothers Collective is about uplifting and supporting our members while challenging the harmful structures that have long excluded and silenced them. Through community-driven events, exhibitions, and intergenerational mentorship, we reclaim space in the art world for our stories, perspectives, and creativity. By fostering resilience and promoting Indigenous values of reciprocity, inclusion, and cultural vitality, Four Mothers Collective empowers its members to build community, inspire change, and reclaim their narratives in a world that often overlooks them.
